The whole of Örebro stood in flames - and almost the whole town was burned down. The great town fire caused only a few deaths, but a large number of inhabitants lost their homes and possessions and disaster had arrived. At this time, Örebro was just a collection of wooden houses and just over 5,000 people lived here. After the destruction was over, planning began for how Örebro should be rebuilt. Now it would be modern: houses made of stone and wider streets. When the water level in Lake Hjälmaren was reduced in the 1880s it was also possible to build on what were previously marshy fringes of the town, in the east and west.
